Identity Transition / AIR-de Batterij
The surroundings of the ‘Batterij aan de Sloterweg’ (built in 1906) have undergone significant transformation over the years. The bunker, once constructed as part of a defensive line, is now surrounded by office buildings, railway and highways, airplanes, and distribution centers. What is the current identity of this area after all these changes? During my residency, I searched for traces of the activities that take place around the fort today. Using, among other techniques, the graphic printing method Anthotype, I created prints and collages that capture the movement, visual language, and sounds surrounding the Battery. When these prints are exposed to light (e.g. UV light), certain elements of the image begin to shift. Colors and contrasts gradually fade, leaving behind only the background of the remaining print—a visual echo of what once was.
